The Automobile Association of Malaysia’s (AAM) Technical
Department is divided into four units
• Operations
• Maintenance
• Battery
• Vehicle Inspection & Valuation
On average, the KL Main office receives between 200 and
400 calls for assistance on a daily basis.
It has some 95 mechanics and tow-truck drivers who
work around the clock in three shifts, patrolling the city on
motorcycles, in vans and tow-trucks.
“At any one time, we will have some 30 mechanics and
vehicles on the road to provide all forms of road assistance
to our members,” said Technical Officer Taufik Abu Bakar.
Taufik is also head’s the Vehicle Inspection & Valuation
Unit.
“The calls come in as early as 5am daily.”
AAM also has an Accident Care Programme where In
the event of an accident, personnel from the nearest AAM
call centre is immediately dispatched to the scene to assist
and provide members with guidance. This is to ensure that
members are protected from being bullied by unscrupulous
tow-truck and independent workshop operators. AAM has
also set-up a special motorcycle patrol unit for the purpose of
dispatching its personnel to the scene of the accident quickly.
All of AAM’s vehicles at the KL Main office are
maintained by its own team of four mechanics. Major or
structural repairs however, are conducted by third parties.
On average, each vehicle clocks between 100 and 200km
per shift, registering between 7,000 and 9,000km per month.
The tow-trucks are fitted with brand new tyres every three
months while the vans every three to six months.
“We have to make sure that our vehicles are in good
condition at all times. There’s practically no rest for the
vehicles except for repairs.” |
